Sometimes, circumstances beyond our control become so overwhelming that we may find ourselves feeling trapped like a bird in a cage. It is easy to become consumed with toxic emotions such a resentment and rage.  We become prisoners within ourselves.  Miserable and longing to be free from the pain we cling to, we cannot sing, as a bird sings.  Instead, we scream.  It’s in moments such as these, we must look deep within ourselves.  It is then will we discover that we have held the key to our own freedom all along.

Sister, I know that you have been hurting.  I’ve been there too.  I was locked up within myself, holding onto pain, bitterness, resentment, and rage.  But, I didn’t know then, what I know now.  I held the key to my own freedom.

It took me a long time to realize that I am able to choose to remain a prisoner of my brokenness and hurt feelings, or lay them down at the feet of Jesus, and receive this peace and joy that my soul longs for and desperately craves.

The choice is your sister.  You hold the key to your own cage.  Won’t you come and fly free with me?

Caged Bird

BY MAYA ANGELOU

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind

And floats downstream till the current ends

And dips his wing in the orange sun rays

And dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage

Can seldom see through his bars of rage

His wings are clipped

And his feet are tied

So he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill

Of things unknown but longed for still

And his tune is heard on the distant hill

For the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze

And the trade winds soft

hrough the sighing trees

And the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn

And he names the sky his own

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream

His wings are clipped

And his feet are tied

So he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill

Of things unknown but longed for still

And his tune is heard on the distant hill

For the caged bird sings of freedom.
